A return for M’Lynn with “Better Me”

The retro-inspired R&B song “Safety Net” marked the beginning of 2023 for singer-songwriter M’Lynn, who now ends the year with “Better Me.” Rich in textures and possessing an overwhelming somber aesthetic, the mid-tempo reflective tune is melancholic. Here, M’Lynn considers love, life, and the unending development of time. She gives us a glimpse into her life and the many things that bother her with lines like “I’m hardwired to overthink, I get depressive when I overthink/I’m so obsessive over little things till I forget about reality,” all while using her powerful and soul-stirring vocal runs. The singer gives this deep and self-aware song her all; she is not one to hold back when speaking her mind or displaying her vulnerability.

M’Lynn is a pianist and singer-songwriter from Dallas, Texas. Her career started when she was fifteen years old and a student at Booker T. Washington High School for the Visual and Performing Arts. She was inspired by many artists, including Roy Hargrove, Edie Brickell, Elliot Skinner, Norah Jones, and Erykah Badu.
